Professional Development for Teachers

Summary:
The Healthy Eating for Bright Futures workshop encompasses a highly effective education session for Alberta's teaching community about nutrition and food.  Elementary schools do not offer Home Economics and Food classes like senior high schools do, however, children from grades K-6 are expected to learn about nutrition according to Alberta’s Health and Life Skills Curriculum. Given that nutrition is an important component of Health and Life Skills program pertaining to the areas of Career and Life Management, Physical Education and Health, it is essential that teachers receive the appropriate nutrition education. My nutrition education will inform teachers of basic nutrition for school aged children, common diet modifications, food marketing for children and implementing health eating strategies in the classroom. This will enable students to have the appropriate nutrition and food knowledge to make well informed decisions. The impact of strong consumer education on food will provide favorable outcomes in health, learning, happiness and our society as a whole.

Who Should Attend:
Teachers, principals and counselors who wish to further their understanding in nutrition, food and overall wellness. The material is appropriate for teaching at all grade levels.

About Session:
Participants will engage in an informative session covering the essential material to influence healthy changes in the classroom, provide teachers with the proper information to educate their classrooms on nutrition and fulfill the nutrition portion of Alberta’s Curriculum for Health.

The following topics will be discussed:

·         Basic food and nutrition principles for children
·         The secrets of food marketing for children
·         Common food barriers and modifications
·         How to integrate healthy eating initiatives in the classroom

Outcomes:
Participants will develop a solid understanding of nutrition and its role in emotional wellness, mental alertness and physical well-being. Teachers will also be able to help students discern and de-code the tricky food marketing tactics often used for school snacks and breakfast cereals, resulting in positive healthy eating changes in the classroom. Teachers will also be able to better connect with students new to Canada who often face food challenges due to dietary restrictions.

Setting:
The workshop is appropriate for a school setting and will be held at the school’s location. Teachers will participate in healthy eating strategies that they can integrate into the classroom. Food will be provided for the session, as many of the activities involve trying different foods.

Cost: $250 for 1.5 hours
